Scripture: Ezekiel 37:1-14

Beloved brothers and sisters in Christ, have you ever felt like living in a “valley of dry bones”? A season where hope seems dead, the future looks empty, and the heart feels spiritually dry.

Perhaps a worker struggling with job uncertainty, a trader whose business is declining, a young person who feels lost, or parents worried about their family’s spiritual life.

The question is: Can God bring life back to something that seems completely dead?

Through the vision given to the prophet Ezekiel, God reveals a powerful truth: God is the source of life, and He can breathe life even into the driest valley.

Ezekiel received this vision while Israel was in exile in Babylon. Nationally they felt like a dead nation—no land, no temple, no hope. Yet God showed that He still had the power to restore His people.

I. God is Sovereign Even in Impossible Situations

(Ezekiel 37:1-3)

The hand of the Lord brought Ezekiel into a valley full of dry bones. The text emphasizes that the bones were very many and very dry. This indicates death that had lasted a long time.

Then God asked the prophet: “Son of man, can these bones live?”

  • Recognition of God's sovereignty
Ezekiel answered, “O Sovereign Lord, You alone know.” This statement shows faith in God's ultimate authority.
  • Human situations often look hopeless
From a human perspective, dry bones cannot live again. Yet God often works precisely where human ability ends.
  • The theological meaning of “dry bones”
The Hebrew word yabesh means completely dried out, symbolizing spiritual death.

Application:

For employees who feel stuck in their career, traders whose businesses struggle, or young people who feel directionless—remember that God is still sovereign even when we see no solution.

Parallel Verses:

  • Jeremiah 32:27 – Nothing is too hard for the Lord.
  • Luke 1:37 – Nothing is impossible with God.

Transition: After revealing the impossible situation, God gives an unexpected command to the prophet.

II. The Word of God Has Power to Bring Life

(Ezekiel 37:4-8)

God commanded Ezekiel: “Prophesy to these bones.”

This shows that life begins through the Word of God.

  • The Word initiates transformation
As Ezekiel prophesied, the bones began to rattle and come together, forming bodies.
  • The meaning of “prophesy”
The Hebrew word naba means speaking God's message with divine authority.
  • The Word prepares the way for spiritual revival
The bodies were formed but still lacked breath. This indicates that God's Word prepares the foundation for the work of the Spirit.

Application:

Real change in life often begins when we return to God's Word—reading Scripture, hearing sermons, and living in obedience.

Parallel Verses:

  • Hebrews 4:12 – The Word of God is living and powerful.
  • Isaiah 55:11 – God's Word will not return empty.

Transition: Yet even after the bodies were formed, something essential was still missing.

III. The Spirit of God Gives the Breath of Life

(Ezekiel 37:9-14)

God then commanded Ezekiel to prophesy to the breath.

The Hebrew word used here is ruach, which means:

  • breath
  • wind
  • spirit

This shows that true life comes from the Spirit of God.

  • The breath of life comes from God
When the breath entered them, they lived and stood as a vast army.
  • A symbol of Israel’s restoration
God explained that the bones represented the whole house of Israel who had lost hope.
  • God’s promise of restoration
The Lord promised to open their graves and bring them back to their land.

This echoes Genesis 2:7, when God breathed life into Adam.

Without the Spirit of God, humanity remains spiritually lifeless.

Application:

  • Youth need the Spirit of God for direction.
  • Workers need the Spirit for strength and integrity.
  • Families need the Spirit for restoration and unity.

Parallel Verses:

  • John 6:63 – The Spirit gives life.
  • Romans 8:11 – The Spirit raises us to life.

Conclusion

Beloved congregation, perhaps today someone feels like they are standing in a valley of dry bones:

  • Dead hopes
  • Weak faith
  • Broken relationships
  • An uncertain future

But the message of Ezekiel 37 is clear: God still gives the breath of life.

When His Word is proclaimed and His Spirit moves, what was dead can live again.

Call to Response:

  • Return to God's Word.
  • Ask the Holy Spirit to renew your life.
  • Trust that God is still working in your situation.

God declares in Ezekiel 37:14: “I will put My Spirit in you, and you shall live.”

When hearts grow dry and hope fades away,
Come to the Lord who gives life each day.
Though valleys of bones seem silent and grim,
The breath of God will restore life again.
