Scripture: 1 SAMUEL 16:1-13

Have you ever misjudged someone by appearance? We often evaluate by outward look. But God sees deeper. The question is: Are we living by human sight or by God’s light?

On Letare Sunday, joy shines in the middle of reflection. In 1 Samuel 16:1-13 we see the transition from Saul to David. This is more than political change; it is a theological declaration that God chooses according to His light.

Background: Saul was rejected because of disobedience. Samuel grieved. Israel faced leadership crisis. In that darkness God sent Samuel to Bethlehem to anoint a new king.

I. GOD’S LIGHT WORKS IN THE MIDST OF FAILURE (vv.1-5)

  • God calls Samuel to rise from grief to hope.
  • Obedience despite fear shows life in the light.
  • Renewal begins at the altar of worship.

Cross Reference: Lamentations 3:22-23 – His mercies are new every morning.

II. GOD’S LIGHT SEES THE HEART (vv.6-10)

  • Humans see outward appearance; God sees the heart.
  • The Hebrew lebab means the center of will and character.
  • Divine election is based on grace, not impressiveness.

Cross Reference: Jeremiah 17:10 – The Lord searches the heart.

III. GOD’S LIGHT ANOINTS THE HIDDEN ONE (vv.11-13)

  • David was called from the field—faithful in small things.
  • The Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon him.
  • David foreshadows Christ, the Son of David.

Cross Reference: 1 Corinthians 1:27 – God chooses the weak.

CONCLUSION

From small Bethlehem, God raised a king. From hidden hearts, He raises light. Let us live as children of light.

Poem:
From silent fields the shepherd came,
Chosen not for earthly fame.
God sees hearts and calls by grace,
Let His light shine in every place.
