Living As Children Of Light

Scripture: Ephesians 5:8-14

Have you ever walked in total darkness? You stumble, unsure, afraid. But when the light is turned on, everything becomes clear. The question is: Are we truly living as light, or still walking in darkness?

On Letare Sunday, joy shines in the middle of Lent. Our text, Ephesians 5:8-14, calls believers to live according to their new identity in Christ.

Background: Paul wrote this letter from prison. Ephesus was a center of trade and idol worship, especially Artemis. Moral darkness filled the city. In that context Paul declares a theological contrast: darkness versus light. This is about identity in Christ.

I. NEW IDENTITY: FROM DARKNESS TO LIGHT (v.8)

“For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord.” Not “in darkness,” but “darkness.” This speaks of nature.

  • Ontological Transformation: Greek skotos means spiritual separation from God; phōs refers to divine life. In Christ we are changed.
  • Union with Christ: “in the Lord” shows participation in Christ, the Light of the world (John 8:12).
  • Ethical Implication: “Walk as children of light.” Identity produces conduct.

Cross Reference: Colossians 1:13 – delivered from the domain of darkness into Christ’s kingdom.

Transition: What does this light look like in daily life?

II. THE CHARACTER OF LIGHT: ITS FRUIT (vv.9-10)

“The fruit of light consists in all goodness, righteousness, and truth.”

  • Goodness: moral excellence flowing from God’s character.
  • Righteousness: living rightly before God and people.
  • Truth: sincerity and integrity without deception.

Verse 10: “Find out what pleases the Lord.” A tested, discerning life.

Cross Reference: Matthew 5:16 – let your light shine before others.

Transition: Light not only produces fruit; it exposes darkness.

III. THE MISSION OF LIGHT: EXPOSING DARKNESS (vv.11-14)

  • Separation: Do not participate in unfruitful works of darkness.
  • Expose: elenchō means to convict for repentance.
  • Awakening: “Awake, O sleeper… Christ will shine on you.” A call to spiritual resurrection.

Cross Reference: John 1:5 – the light shines in the darkness.

CONCLUSION

The world does not need a dim church, but a shining church. Christ has shone upon us. Therefore, live as children of light!

Poem:
Across the sea the bright winds blow,
Hope arises, hearts aglow.
Live as light where’er you stand,
Glorify God throughout the land.
