Scripture: Ephesians 5:8-14
On Letare Sunday, joy shines in the middle of Lent. Our text, Ephesians 5:8-14, calls believers to live according to their new identity in Christ.
Background: Paul wrote this letter from prison. Ephesus was a center of trade and idol worship, especially Artemis. Moral darkness filled the city. In that context Paul declares a theological contrast: darkness versus light. This is about identity in Christ.
“For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord.” Not “in darkness,” but “darkness.” This speaks of nature.
Cross Reference: Colossians 1:13 – delivered from the domain of darkness into Christ’s kingdom.
Transition: What does this light look like in daily life?
“The fruit of light consists in all goodness, righteousness, and truth.”
Verse 10: “Find out what pleases the Lord.” A tested, discerning life.
Cross Reference: Matthew 5:16 – let your light shine before others.
Transition: Light not only produces fruit; it exposes darkness.
Cross Reference: John 1:5 – the light shines in the darkness.
The world does not need a dim church, but a shining church. Christ has shone upon us. Therefore, live as children of light!
Poem:
Across the sea the bright winds blow,
Hope arises, hearts aglow.
Live as light where’er you stand,
Glorify God throughout the land.
