Scripture: John 6:1-15

Children, have you ever shared your lunch with a friend? How did it feel when your friend smiled because of you?

Have you ever felt that what you have is not enough? Not enough food, not enough money, not enough ability? Today we learn that when we follow Jesus and serve like Him, there is great joy.

Background of the Text: This event happened after Jesus healed many sick people. A large crowd followed Him because they saw the signs (Greek: sēmeion) He performed. They saw His power and compassion. Jesus went up on a mountainside near the Sea of Galilee. The Passover was near, reminding us of God’s provision in the wilderness.

I. JESUS SEES AND CARES (vv. 5-6)

Jesus saw the large crowd and asked Philip, “Where shall we buy bread?” He already knew what He would do, but He tested him.

The idea of compassion in the Gospels comes from the Greek word splagchnizomai, meaning to be moved deeply from within. Jesus is not distant. He cares about physical and spiritual needs.

Theological Emphasis: God is our Shepherd who provides.

  • Psalm 23:1 – “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.”
  • Matthew 9:36 – Jesus had compassion because they were like sheep without a shepherd.

Transition: Jesus sees the need… but how will He provide?

II. GIVING IN FAITH, EVEN WHEN IT SEEMS SMALL (vv. 8-9)

A boy had five barley loaves and two fish. Barley bread was simple food for the poor. Humanly speaking, it was not enough.

The Greek word for bread is artos, symbolizing sustenance. The boy did not hold back. He gave what he had.

Theological Message: God uses small offerings for great purposes. What matters is faith and obedience.

  • Zechariah 4:10 – “Do not despise small beginnings.”
  • 2 Corinthians 9:7 – God loves a cheerful giver.

Illustration: A child once sang a simple worship song sincerely in church. God used that small song to comfort someone who was grieving.

Transition: When we give in faith… watch what Jesus does!

III. JOY WHEN JESUS MULTIPLIES (vv. 11-13)

Jesus gave thanks (eucharistēsas) and distributed the bread. Everyone ate as much as they wanted, and twelve baskets were left over.

The word “filled” shows abundance. Jesus is more than enough.

Theological Message: When we follow the serving Jesus, we experience joy by seeing His power at work.

  • Ephesians 3:20 – God is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask.
  • Acts 20:35 – It is more blessed to give than to receive.

AGE-BASED APPLICATION

I. Toddlers (1–5 years)

  • Application: Learn to share snacks or toys.
  • Parents: Teach children to pray before meals like Jesus gave thanks.
  • Activity: Paper “bread sharing” craft and give it to friends.

II. Children (6–10 years)

  • Application: Bring extra snacks to share.
  • Activity: Short drama of the five loaves and two fish.
  • Game: Kindness challenge for one week.

III. Youth (11–15 years)

  • Application: Serve friends who struggle or feel lonely.
  • Group Project: Collect food for those in need.
  • Discussion: What are your “five loaves and two fish”?

CLOSING

Children, will you follow Jesus who serves? Will you offer what you have?

Let us surrender our “loaves and fish” to Him. Jesus can turn small things into great blessings.

Closing Poetic Line:
Little hands that choose to give,
Find the greatest joy to live.
Following Jesus day by day,
Serving others is our way.

Amen.
