Scripture: Ephesians 1:3–10

Have you ever received a precious gift, admired it, yet never used or shared it?

Rhetorical question: Are God’s blessings meant only to be admired, or to be lived out and shared?

On Sexagesima Sunday, we are reminded that God’s saving work began long before we responded. In Ephesians 1:3–10, Paul lifts our eyes to the grand design of salvation: we are blessed in Christ so that God’s grace may flow through us to the world.

TEXTUAL BACKGROUND

Ephesians was written to believers living in a powerful, pluralistic city. Verses 3–14 form one long sentence in Greek—a continuous outburst of praise. True theology leads to worship, and true worship leads to a life that blesses others.

I. SPIRITUAL BLESSINGS ORIGINATE FROM GOD AND ARE ROOTED IN CHRIST (vv.3–4)

  • God is the source of blessing
Blessing begins with God’s initiative, not human effort.
  • Blessings are spiritual and eternal
They are not limited by earthly circumstances.
  • The goal is holiness
We were chosen to live transformed lives.

Cross reference: 2 Peter 1:3.

II. THE BLESSING OF SALVATION FLOWS FROM GOD’S GRACE (vv.5–7)

  • Adopted as God’s children
  • Redeemed by Christ’s blood
  • Forgiven through abundant grace

Cross reference: Romans 5:8.

III. GOD’S BLESSING SERVES HIS MISSION FOR THE WORLD (vv.8–10)

  • The mystery revealed
  • Christ as the center of all things
  • The church as God’s instrument of blessing

Cross reference: Matthew 5:16.

CONCLUSION

We are blessed in Christ with eternal blessings. Now we are sent to live as a blessing so that the world may see God’s glory.

From heaven’s grace our blessings flow,
Through faithful lives Your love we show.
Blessed by God, not meant to stay,
But shared in love along the way.
