Introduction
Israel waited in darkness, longing for the promised Messiah. Mark begins boldly:
“The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.”
Hope has come in a Person.
Point 1 – True Hope Begins with God’s Good News (Mark 1:1)
- Jesus is the promised Messiah. (Isaiah 9:6)
- Jesus is the Son of God, the foundation of hope. (Psalm 2:7)
- Hope is our response to God’s saving work. (Romans 1:16)
Point 2 – True Hope Is Purified Through Repentance (Mark 1:2–5)
- God fulfills His promises. (Numbers 23:19)
- Repentance (metanoeo) is a change of life direction. (Acts 3:19)
- Confessing sins brings restoration. (1 John 1:9)
Point 3 – True Hope Is Fulfilled in Jesus Who Is Greater Than All Hopes (Mark 1:6–8)
- John is humble; Jesus is exalted. (John 3:30)
- Jesus baptizes with the Holy Spirit. (Ezekiel 36:26–27)
- Jesus is the final answer to hope. (John 14:6)
Closing poem:
Parrots fly to the riverside tree,
Resting softly in evening grace.
When the world gives no certainty,
Hope in God holds its eternal place.
