Scripture: Psalm 40:5–11

I. INTRODUCTION (ICE BREAKER)

If God asked you today, “Do you consider yourself rich?” how would you answer?

Many define wealth by possessions, success, or security. Yet countless people appear prosperous while living spiritually empty and exhausted.

The pressing question is this: Do we measure wealth by the world’s standard or by God’s truth?

Psalm 40 records David’s testimony—a king who had much, yet declared that true riches are found only in the Lord.

TEXTUAL BACKGROUND

Psalm 40 is a psalm of thanksgiving following divine deliverance. David reflects on God’s mighty acts, His will, and the responsibility of faithful witness. The psalm reveals that spiritual wealth flows from knowing who God is and trusting His purposes.

POINT I: RICH IN GOD’S WORKS AND PURPOSES (v.5)

“Many, O LORD my God, are the wonders you have done, and your thoughts toward us cannot be counted.”

Subpoint 1: Rich in God’s Mighty Works

The Hebrew word ma‘aseh refers to God’s active deeds. David recognized his life as a testimony of divine intervention.

Subpoint 2: Rich in God’s Intentional Plans

Machashabah speaks of deliberate design. God’s plans for His people are never random.

Subpoint 3: Rich Beyond Measure

God’s blessings are immeasurable—far exceeding human calculation.

Parallel Scripture: Jeremiah 29:11 – God’s plans bring hope and a future.

Transition: Recognizing God’s abundance leads us to a transformed response.

POINT II: RICH IN OBEDIENT DEVOTION, NOT EMPTY RITUAL (vv.6–8)

“Sacrifice and offering you have not desired… but you have given me an open ear.”

Subpoint 1: God Desires More Than Ritual

External religion without surrendered hearts does not please God.

Subpoint 2: An Opened Ear

The phrase karah oznayim implies ears opened for obedience—a life tuned to God’s will.

Subpoint 3: Delight in Doing God’s Will

Chaphets expresses joy, not obligation. True obedience flows from love.

Parallel Scripture: 1 Samuel 15:22 – Obedience is better than sacrifice.

Transition: Obedient hearts naturally overflow with testimony.

POINT III: RICH IN TESTIMONY, SALVATION, AND STEADFAST LOVE (vv.9–11)

“I have told the glad news of deliverance in the great congregation.”

Subpoint 1: Rich in Public Witness

Spiritual wealth is meant to be shared.

Subpoint 2: Rich in God’s Salvation

Teshu‘ah means complete deliverance—body and soul.

Subpoint 3: Rich in Covenant Love

Chesed refers to God’s faithful, unfailing love.

Parallel Scripture: Psalm 103:2 – Forget not all His benefits.

PRACTICAL APPLICATION

  • Employees: Work as an act of worship.
  • Business People: Practice integrity, trusting God as provider.
  • Youth: Find identity in God’s purpose.
  • Parents: Model faith as a living testimony.

CONCLUSION & CALL TO RESPONSE

God invites us to redefine wealth—not by what we possess, but by whom we trust.

In Him, we are rich in purpose, obedience, and unfailing love.

POETIC CLOSING & PANTUN

Not silver nor gold defines our worth,
But faithful love that gives us birth.

Across the sea we sail with care,
Guided by truth beyond despair;
In God alone our riches stand,
Now and forever, held by His hand.
