Scripture: Luke 1:39–45
Ask the children: “Have you ever felt so happy that you wanted to tell someone right away?”
Just like that, Mary quickly went to visit Elizabeth.
After the angel announced that Mary would carry Jesus by the Holy Spirit, she went to visit Elizabeth, who was also miraculously pregnant. The word “hurried” comes from the Greek spoudē, meaning eagerness and joy. The baby in Elizabeth’s womb “leaped” (skirtáō) and Elizabeth blessed Mary.
Mary’s visit brought the presence of Christ into Elizabeth’s home. The visit brought joy, faith, and confirmation of God’s promise.
Mary moved quickly to obey God. Obedience brings joy. Cross-reference: Psalm 119:60 – “I hurry to obey Your commands.”
The presence of Jesus caused joy and the filling of the Holy Spirit. Cross-reference: Luke 1:15 – John would be filled with the Spirit.
Mary trusted God fully (pisteuō = to believe). Cross-references: Hebrews 11:1; Luke 1:38.
A small candle lights a dark room. Even something small can bring light and joy. Mary brought the Light of the world—Jesus—to Elizabeth.
Ask: “Does my presence bring joy like Mary brought joy to Elizabeth?”
Call to response: “Lord, make me a bringer of Your joy.”
