Mary Visits Elizabeth

Children

Scripture: Luke 1:39–45

Opening (Ice Breaker)

Ask the children: “Have you ever felt so happy that you wanted to tell someone right away?”
Just like that, Mary quickly went to visit Elizabeth.

Background of the Text

After the angel announced that Mary would carry Jesus by the Holy Spirit, she went to visit Elizabeth, who was also miraculously pregnant. The word “hurried” comes from the Greek spoudē, meaning eagerness and joy. The baby in Elizabeth’s womb “leaped” (skirtáō) and Elizabeth blessed Mary.

Relation of Theme & Text

Mary’s visit brought the presence of Christ into Elizabeth’s home. The visit brought joy, faith, and confirmation of God’s promise.
