Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven Is Near
07 Dec 2025 — St. Jesri HT Purba & AI
Sermon
Scripture: Matthew 3:1–12
Introduction
When we travel far, GPS often says: “Turn now… go straight… return to the right way.”
If a device can redirect us, why do our hearts resist when God calls us back?
Advent reminds us: the King is coming. And His call is clear: “Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is near!”
Background
Matthew introduces John the Baptist in the wilderness. The word “repent” (metanoeo) means a total change of mind and life. The Kingdom is “near” (engiken)—God is at the door.
Point 1: Repentance Is an Urgent Response to God’s Kingdom (vv. 1–3)
Transition: John’s voice echoes today in our hearts.
- Repentance is a change of direction.
- Repentance prepares the way for God.
- Repentance produces visible fruit.
Cross References:
- Isaiah 55:7 — Return to the Lord who abundantly pardons.
- Luke 13:3 — Without repentance, all perish.
Point 2: True Repentance Is Seen in Its Fruit (vv. 4–10)
Transition: Matthew shows what real repentance looks like.
- Not outward appearance, but the heart.
- A lifestyle transformed.
- Judgment awaits the unrepentant.
Cross References:
- Galatians 5:22–23 — The fruit of the Spirit.
- James 2:17 — Faith without works is dead.
Point 3: Repentance Leads Us to Christ Who Baptizes with Spirit and Fire (vv. 11–12)
Transition: John points us to the Messiah.
- Christ is greater than any prophet.
- The Spirit seals new life.
- The fire purifies God’s people.
Cross References:
- Ezekiel 36:26–27 — A new heart and Spirit.
- Acts 1:8 — Power from the Holy Spirit.
Conclusion
Advent calls us to return, be renewed, and welcome the King.
“Lord, purify our hearts and make us ready for Your coming.”
Closing Poem:
Morning market sells the ruby fruit,
Kept safely in a wooden crate.
Repent, prepare your heart to suit,
For Christ the King is near the gate.
